NPSAC FAQ Page!

Here are emails concerning issues you may have. Since I've gone to boot camp April 2002, things may have changed, but this is only what I suggest. You may need to check with someone who has just recently gone to get the most up to date advice!
No questions are silly so please send me an email! All Senders will be kept anonymous!

Keep in mind, these are answers that got me through boot camp successfully.
They may not be the best ones for you.

Hi Marta -

Great website - I am so impressed! I feel like I will be much more prepared
for boot on April 21st! I'm excited to go, and I am wondering, if you had it
to do all over again, what is the coolest job to volunteer for? Although I
must say, you sound like you have taken laundry to a brand new level! Just
curious as to what you would pick to be the most advantageous.

Thanks!

P.S. I appreciate the info provided on what to being for females!!

Well, I've changed my answer... I wouldn't pick anything but Laundry PO cause it was fun to help people out the way I did! ;-)  Here's the cards I got from my awesome shipmates!

****For Female Readers****

Hi Marta,

I just read your wonderful website NavyGirl.com and I must say you did a brilliant job on it.  You are very talented.  I have been reading the NPSAC website and getting prepared for Boot Camp in  June.  I know you are busy but was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me.  I am not nervous about my physical health or anything it just seems they are very particular about items that we bring.  I thought asking a female would help and you seem to be very knowledgeable.

1)  The 6 pair brief underwear - can we bring the high cut briefs that don't go down so low on your thighs or do they have to be the REAL briefs? They have to be brief style, and I would bring more than 6. I got away with bringing 12 because I have a thing about clean panties. I also did laundry there, but then again I'm somewhat of a clean freak..

2)  Do you have to bring sport bras and do they have to be 100% cotton or can they be spandex? They should be standard sports bras, nothing fancy. Make sure they are white.

3)  The regular bras - can they clasp in front or is there a particular style they want? again... very standard and boring. Clasp in the back, no lacey bra, wired is ok, but nothing fancy, so no push up bras!

4)  The white socks - do they want crew (short, ankle, knee)? Get white socks that go past your ankle. Again... I would bring at least 4 pairs extra. I did.

5)  The black socks - I know we need one pair of dress but should I buy the real thick black ones that are long or short? I would bring 2-3 pairs of black think socks, and then bring about 6 pairs of thick black boot socks. Just don't tell anyone or they may try to "borrow" from you or be a pain and ask you. Take care of yourself!

6)  Navy Shoe shine kit - Did the Navy give you one?  If not, where did you buy it? Just a simple shoe shining kit. No instant shine. You need the polish, the shining rag and that bristle brush. Don't forget to bring an old toothbrush for when you have to clean your chukka boots and put polish in the spot that only your old toothbrush will get to!

7)  Garment Bag - What size would you recommend?  Large, small type. Get a large garment bag, preferably with pockets. I found that I would stash "stuff" in there such as pictures of my kids and my little journal and nobody even looked in it. Just don't stash stuff you don't need otherwise someone will be on to you...

8)  My hair is about 3 inches past my shoulders.  Do you think I should cut it or did people leave their hair long and pin it up? I cut my hair for boot camp. Big mistake since it takes over 2 years to grow back to the long style I had. I will say it was nice to not bother with it, but there were a few woman who had long hair and a few women who got there hair cut short there. Keep in mind they are not from Gene Juarez and they will butcher it! If you can keep it pinned up with little to no bobby pins and black rubber bands then go that way. Make sure you bring plenty of those rubber bands and hide them.

I apologize if these questions are so particular.  I just would like to have everything I buy to be exactly what I need.  I would appreciate any input that you have and thank you again in advance.  I really enjoyed all of your journal entries, photos, etc.  Good luck with all of your endeavors.

No problem with the questions. Actually you are the first to ask questions like these. I wish I had a female I could have talked to before boot camp. I had to learn it all on my own, therefore I want to help others! Good luck and don't hesitate to ask anymore questions!

Thanks so much,  J
